They are an optical experience that delights the eye!
Tunnel books - also called peepshows - are a series of cut-out panels attached one behind the other, with concertina folded hinges that allow a scene to unfold for viewing.
Scenes are painted on the rear cardboard, the inside of the paper tube, and sometimes items are placed in the eyeline. The viewer raises the top board, thereby extending the tube, and looks through the hole at a three-dimensional scene.
