The Barong

The Story - Barong is a character in the mythology of Bali. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda in the mythological traditions of Bali.  The  Barong Ket is one of five traditional Barong. In Bali each region of the island has its own protective spirit for its forests and lands. Each Barong for each region is modeled after a different animal. There is a boar, a tiger, a dragon (or serpent) and the traditional lion.

Barong Tunnel Book

Inspiration - In traditional Balinese storytelling dance, the Barong creature, with its long mane, fantastic fangs, and bulging eyes is is propelled by two people who maneuver the costume with whimsical and mischievous movements to express its fun-loving nature. So, it wasn't a great leap to see this multi-layered creature and the story played out in a tunnel book.
